Question: Patients frequently ask health care providers for advice based on their specific professional knowledge and expertise. In some situations such as MAID, safe-injection sites, and/or legalized cannabis may cause the personal preferences and beliefs of the care provider to be ethically challenged.
Is it acceptable for a health care provider to give treatment advice to a patient based on their own judgment and experience-for example, "If I were you, I would do this?" Where do you draw the line between strongly suggesting the patient follow your advice and allowing the patient to make an independent choice?
