Discussion Post
Make sure in your discussion that you stay focused on analyzing the film, so when you make a point, use specific examples from the film to illustrate it. And don't forget to end with a discussion question of your own!
I. It is impossible not to respond to the cinematography and editing here. What are the effects of shooting the movie (or at least almost all of it) as one long tracking shot? How does this change our viewing experience when we watch it for the first time without immediately realizing it is one continuous shot? What about when we're in the know?
II. Pay attention to the score. How does it complement the cinematography and editing? Do you notice any moments when the score becomes part of the action of the movie? When we can see musicians? What is the effect of those scenes?
III. Many of the scenes are tight and even claustrophobic. What happens when this tendency is interrupted? Is there special significance to outdoor scenes or is there a shift in tone?
IV. How do you navigate the surreal elements in the film? How did you decide what is real or imagined? What clues did the filmmaker provide to help decode specific scenes? What about the ending? If it is often the case that the surreal elements can be read as Riggan's delusions, how do you understand the ending?
V. What is the function of the play within the film? Why did the filmmaker choose an adaptation of "What We Talk About When We Talk About Love"? How do the themes of the play and the themes of the film work together?
VI. What is the function of Birdman's voice and character in the play? The film seems to be trying to say the opposite of what Birdman says about the value of Hollywood, or does it? Does Birdman have a point about spectacle? What does the film ultimately say about celebrity and artistry? How about the role of media in art and celebrity?
VII. How are relationships portrayed in this film? How are women positioned? Is it different from how men are positioned? What are the sexual politicsof this film?
The response should include a reference list. Double-space, using Times New Roman 12 pnt font, one-inch margins, and APA style of writing and citations.
