Purpose of assessment task
Early pregnancy is an exciting time for a woman and her partner as they prepare for birth of their baby. Confirmation of pregnancy can be a strong motivator for lifestyle adjustment with benefits to the long term health of the woman and a potential to impact on the current pregnancy outcome.
Assignment question
Cessation of alcohol is one modifiable lifestyle adjustment that women can undertake in pregnancy. Discuss the reasons for, and the role of the health professional in facilitating this lifestyle modification.
Learning Outcomes
ULO1: Demonstrate understanding of human conception and stages of embryonic and fetal development.
ULO2: Demonstrate understanding of physiological and psychological impact on the pregnant, birthing and postnatal woman.
ULO3: Explain health promotion and education strategies to support pregnant women and their families to maintain a healthy lifestyle
ULO4: Identify the role of the multidisciplinary health care team related to quality and safety in the care of women and their family during pregnancy, labour, birth and the immediate postnatal period
Student instructions for assessment task
- Draw upon relevant concepts presented in this unit particularly:
- The physiological and psychological impact of lifestyle choices on the pregnant woman.
- The role of the multidisciplinary team in educating and supporting women in regard to health promotion.
- Access relevant contemporary literature to support your discussion. References should mainly include refereed journal articles and government reports. The suggested readings in the unit are a good place to start. References to google websites and/or Wikipedia are not appropriate for this assessment task.
