Assignment task: We come full circle once again. "I am Not Pocahonta" reminds us of Hernandez's piece on identity and Alexie's piece on Native Americans. This piece is about finding that society stereotypes you based on one aspect of your identity, and about having to fight that stereotype all of your life. As discussed last week, this piece is an argumentative essay that asks its audience to stop believing the stereotype, to stop watching movies or wearing Halloween costumes that appropriate people's cultural identities.
Have you ever been subjected to a stereotype yourself? If you're not already familiar with it, look up the word "microaggression". Provide a definition of the word and share a way in which you might have experienced or seen someone experience a response to the based on a stereotype.
