Problem
My question is about Homer's, The Odyssey. The Phaiakians kindly deposit Odysseus safely in his home in Ithaka. But for doing so, they pay the hefty price of having Poseidon "turn a ship to stone and root it to the bottom of the sea" and "place a rock upon their isle," meaning that their civilization is forever hidden from strangers at best, or utterly destroyed at worst. Given the consequences of their decision to honor the xenia, do you think that the Phaiakians did the right thing?
