Assignment -
Introduction - The use of force seems to be present in only about 1.6 percent of all encounters with the public; however, it takes place more often in certain cities and during certain types of encounters. The legal standard for what is appropriate force is reasonableness, but it is somewhat problematic to review an officer's behavior after the fact and without knowing or perceiving the circumstances in the same way as the officer on the scene. For this assignment we will research a police use of force incident.
Activity Instructions - Oscar Grant, Levar Jones, John Crawford III, Tamir Rice, Michael Brown, Eric Garner, Walter Scott, Freddie Gray, some of these names are more familiar than others; all of this man were killed by police officers. These incidents have indeed sparked a national debate about the mission and actions of police across the country.
Research one of these use of force incidents or one similar. Give an overview of the incident. Look at the officers and subjects actions investigating where things went wrong in the incident. Do you agree or disagree with the officers or subjects actions. Talk about any ethical dilemma in the situation.
