Assignment task:

The purpose of this assignment is for Filipino students to explore how factors such as culture, ethnicity generation, socio-economic status, religious or spiritual beliefs, gender identity, gender expression, and sexual orientation intersect within families to shape health outcomes. By examining these intersections, students can deepen their understanding of how diverse family contexts impact health and healing journeys. Through exploration and personal reflection, these students will develop insights that can inform culturally sensitive and inclusive health care practices.

Instructions:

Students will prepare a written reflection of 500 to 750 words that addresses the following components:

1. List and describe two of your Filipino family traditions related to aging, health, or healing.

2. Give an example of Filipino culture as it relates to your family for each of the following factors: socio-cultural, religious, economic, and environmental.  

3. Describe how diversity can influence the Filipino individual's or family's experience of aging. Include four diversity factors (e.g., ethnicity, culture, generation, socio-economic status, religious or spiritual beliefs, gender identity, gender expression, and sexual orientation) in your answer.

4. Describe how diversity can influence the Filipino individual or family's experience of illness and disability. Include family dynamics in relation to accessing health care and making decisions about treatment plans and procedures. Include at least four of the diversity factors in your answer.

5. Describe how diversity can influence the Filipino individual's and/or family's experience of health and healing. Include all five dimensions of health in your answer (physical, psychological, cognitive, social, and spiritual).

6. As a Filipino student, describe four ways that you could provide culturally sensitive care to your clients. Be clear, detailed, and specific in your examples.

Note: Please answer all six questions (rather than choosing one question). This approach allows students to build on their reflections from each answer and build toward the final reflection on methods for providing culturally sensitive care.
