Functions of the Automotive Compound
The compound is the distribution centre for cars/SUV/light trucks (generic term is Automotive-Product: AP). The APs destined for the Greater Toronto Areas (GTA) are shipped from various assembly plants from North America by railcars to the CPRAC. They are driven off from the railcars via elevated ramps and parked in assigned spots in the facility. The AP are sorted based on the manufacturer, the vehicle identification numbers (VIN), the type of vehicle, and the destination dealers.
The facility is managed jointly by AutoTrans, a 3rd Party Logistics Provider (3PL) and CPR Intermodal Service. CPR is responsible for shunting the railcars into the facility, and moves the elevated ramps into position for loading/unloading. AutoTrans provides the ground workers for driving the vehicles on/off the ramps to the assigned spot in the holding yard, and manage the fleet of tractor-trailers for delivery of AP to the dealerships throughout the GTA.
