Applied Business Case

Purpose: The purpose of the Applied Business Case is to enable you to learn and utilise material from the course in an applied manner. This will give you a greater understanding of the subject matter and therefore enable you to have a deeper learning experience throughout the course.

Learning outcomes addressed:

1. Undertake strategic analysis of an organisation within the international business environment.

2. Engage in problem-solving to construct the strategic options available to organisations internationally

3. Formulate intellectually rigorous strategic management plans to enable organisations to effectively pursue opportunities and mitigate risks.

4. Evaluate the quality and progress of a proposed, or actual, international business strategy and how to monitor this.

Requirement: You are required to read the applied case problem (provided in Moodle), and write a short report to on Value Chain Analysis of your selected company.

The key requirement is that you match the course material (theory)with the situation presented in the selected company (practice).

Assessment

This course is assessed by applied case (described in a different document on Moodle) based around international strategic management and business strategy. This assessment is about strategy formulation by assessing different external factors and their impact on the business. We have selected Value Chain Analysis, which is strategic business tool.

Requirement: You are required to construct a case based on an applied case related international strategic management issue. This case is an applied piece of work which requires considerable analysis, evaluation and synthesis in a concise manner. It is strongly founded in reality and whilst it utilises theories and concepts it must be practical with the aim of providing the reader with direction. You will need to approach the assignment from a strategic management perspective, and undertake and incorporate extensive research in to your case.

Length: Approximately 4-6 pages (approximately 1500 words), plus bibliography and appendices

Application of concepts and theories enables you to demonstrate sound knowledge of the course material and provides you with the skills and confidence to be able to transition your knowledge in to professional situations.

Assessment Description

When formulating a business strategy there are several strategic business tools that can help organizations in this step. One of these vital tools is Value Chain Analysis (VCA), which is normally utilised to conduct internal analysis. In this assessment, the students should utilise VCA and apply it on a growing company in New Zealand that is expanding internationally or in the process of expanding such as Orion. For instance, Orion is one of the leading organization for providing recent technology in software development in healthcare industry. The students are required to apply VCA to measure the level of competencies ofOrion from New Zealand. A deep analysis when conducting the internal analysis is required. The students are also welcome to recommend and criticize during the internal analysis. The outcome will be a paper consisting of at most 5 pages.
