Formulate a nutritional plan for a patient

Nursing requires us to assess patients all the time. We can find any underlying diseases a patient can have before performing any procedures just by assessing and asking the patient questions. In the aspect of nutrition, nutrition plays a major role in how the body functions and how well it can function. A nutritional assessment can consist of "a thorough clinical examination (history and physical examination), anthropometric measurements, diagnostic tests, and dietary assessments" (Kesari & Noel, 2023). During the assessment, many different types of information will be collected. We know that subjective data is data that one's own opinions and biases can impact whereas objective data is data that can be observed and proven. Subjective data that can help formulate a nutritional plan for a patient are their family history, eating habits, dietary preferences, and any factors that could possibly affect their eating habits (Kesari & Noel, 2023). Objective data would be their weight changes, BMI, and any signs of malnutrition such as bleeding gums or poor healing (Kesari & Noel, 2023). Collecting this information will give us a better idea of the patient's nutrition status and how to help them improve it.

Macronutrients are our main sources of nutrients to power the body. Macronutrients consist of protein, fats, and carbohydrates. Each source serves its own purpose and helps keep the body healthy and running. Proteins provide metabolic functions such as tissue-building, backup energy, and forming neurotransmitters (ATI, 2019). Our fats provide us with energy and also supply the tissues (ATI, 2019). And lastly, carbohydrates are the main source of energy for the body (ATI, 2019). Together these macronutrients provide the human body its resources to survive and function on a daily basis, so this is why it is important to have a daily intake that has a sufficient amount of each macronutrient. One disorder that impacts the metabolism of carbohydrates is glucose-galactose malabsorption. With this disorder, it is fatal if "lactose, sucrose, glucose, and galactose are not removed from the diet" (National Library of Medicine, n.d.). The SGLT1 protein in this disorder is unable to move glucose and galactose out of the intestine, which leads to it drawing water out of the body and causing diarrhea (National Library of Medicine, n.d.).
