For this exercise, you are going to build from scratch a pyramid of energy. You can see an example of such a pyramid of energy flow in your textbook in Ch. 3. In addition, there is an explanation on that page the provides explanation about how much usable energy is passed from each trophic level to the next. In general, we assume that only 90% of usable energy is lost with each transfer. This translates to the 10% ecological efficiency rule: Only 10% of the usable energy is passed from each trophic level to the next.

Use the drawing functions on your word processing program to draw your own energy pyramid. If you are not comfortable with using the drawing features then just use dashes and your space bar to make a pyramid.

Do not use the numbers included in the text example; instead, make up your own numbers but use the 10% rule to show how much energy transfers from one level to the next.

Your diagram should include:

1) trophic level labels, with an example of an organism (e.g. producer, pine tree).

2) Indicate the levels of the pyramid where energy is obtained from photosynthesis and the levels where aerobic respiration is important.
