EXAMPLE Shifting a graph horizontally
For the function y = x2 if we add 2 to x, we get y = (x + 2)2 or if we add -3 to x, y = (x - 3)2 The graphs of these three functions are displayed in Fig. We see that the graph of we get y = (x + 2)2 is 2 units to the left of y = x2 and that the graph of y = (x - 3)2 is 3 units to the right of y = x2.
