Assignment task:
Adult learners are not a new group, but the focus on the adult learning theories and practices has become more of a priority outside of traditional educational settings in the past few years. Adult learning theories are designed to meet the adult learner "where they are" (as opposed to a child learner) and provide opportunities for them to utilize knowledge and experience from their past to enrich current learning. This is particularly important during an adjustment period when adult learners (Soldiers) are not only being exposed to different ideas, but are attempting to change an institutional mindset, as well. The Army has shifted the focus of primary military education to include a heavier emphasis on topics traditionally seen as strictly academic, more relevance-based learning considering a broader range of skillsets, and differing delivery methods. The changes are an adjustment to a changing force demographic and a shift in the responsibilities shouldered by modern Soldiers. It is critical that senior leaders understand not only how to implement adult learning strategies into the professional development of their Soldiers but why the change works.
