Mendel's approach to answering scientific questions differed from his contemporaries in a couple of ways. First, he chose to focus on just a few traits for his studies instead of several different ones. Second, he incorporated mathematics into his analysis. This was something which was uncommon in plant breeding in Mendel's day.
