Fire safety management for clubs:

In clubs and other places where there is music being played, or other entertainment, it is important that the music (or other entertainment) is turned off immediately when the evacuation signal is given. This will enable the evacuation warning message or signal to be heard and it will remove the incentive that some people feel to stay in the building.  In theatres and concert halls the most effective method of giving people the

evacuation signal has been found to be a person on the stage with a microphone telling them to leave immediately.  If this happens then people tend to have sufficient confidence in the message.  If this does not happen, people often start to doubt if they still need to evacuate.  People do tend to need information to be confirmed at least once, and often a number of times, before they can accept it as the truth.

Members of the public have little faith in, and tend not to believe, conventional fire alarm sounders. They have a bit more faith in recorded voice messages and are likely to believe the message so many will respond in the correct way by commencing their evacuation.  Members of the public have great faith in a member of staff telling them directly, either as a group or as an individual, that they have to evacuate and virtually all will respond positively by moving to an exit when directly instructed to do so by a staff member.

If the building normally has dimmed lighting (such as in a restaurant or club) then the lighting should be arranged, by interface with the fire alarm, so that it gets brighter for an evacuation.

Sometimes fire alarm engineers ensure that the fire alarm is very loud as this can be uncomfortable for people and they are more likely to leave.
