Fins vs Canards
Canard control
- Good lift/latax control for moderate angles of attack.
- Shed vortices can interfere with tail to generate roll moment.
- Tendency to stall at high angle of attack-alleviated by fixed front canard.
Fin/tail control
- Efficient packaging of subsystems.
- Low hinge moment/acutator torque because of relatively low angle of attack.
- Low induced roll moment (shed vortices are behind and do not interfere with other components).
- Good efficiency at high angles of attack.
- Poor lift/latax control for statically stable airframes because of low angle of attack.
- Sometimes used with guidance vanes in rocket plume.
