A rather confused student Ina Fogg, hydrolyzed the intermediate ester with 6M HCl rather than 3M NaOH and then she boiled the reaction mixture with 50% NaaOH instead of 6M HCl. Filtration of the cooled solution yielded only a little dimedone. Finally realizing her mistake, she acidified the filtrate and a white solid precipitated, but its melting point was different from that of dimedone. What was this solid, and how did it form?
