Case Study.
You are the store manager for Jeans Shack. This is one of 1200 retail units located across United States. As the store manager, you are mainly responsible for supervising eight to ten retail employees. Since of the small size of staff, there is no assistant store manager. You have only recently been promoted to this position from another store in the chain.
One of your part-time salespeople, Paula Black is 19 and has the young child. She is one of your better workers. But she is almost late for work. You have spoken to her about this many times, but nothing seems to work. She sometimes has trouble finding baby-sitters. As she is employed full-time during the day, she is sometimes late leaving her other job. She also argues that she works twice as hard as anyone else and stays late to make up for her lateness.
There is no question that she is the best salesperson you have and that she is better at putting stock on floor and also at working the displays. You also know that she wants the additional income to help support her child.
One Thursday evening just before Christmas, it is very busy. The crew scheduled to get off at 6.00 p.m is worried to leave so they could do their Christmas shopping. Paula is late again, and you have to ask one of the day crew to stay until she comes. As you walk into the back room where your personnel check in, you overhear two of your full-time workers talking. “That Paula is getting preferred treatment. Why must she be given favors? If I pulled those stunts. I’d be fired in a minute!”
Paula finally arrives, 30 minutes late. You feel you should do something.
