This discussion will explore the concept of civic engagement, the social barriers that impede participation, and the role of the internet in contemporary civic engagement. For many, civic engagement simply means voting, but it can take many forms. It can be political or apolitical in nature. It can mean involvement in the political process, participating in community research, direct service, donations, advocacy, etc. Over the years, civic engagement has changed: in some ways reduced due to social structures in place, in other ways empowered. The internet, in particular, has a unique role in contemporary civic engagement. If nothing else, the virtual world allows people from distant regions to become involved in the same effort where once they would have been limited by distance.
