Discussion Post: Autonomous Operations In Controlled Airspace
The regulation of UAS in U.S. airspace was launched. Similar situations are occurring in other countries and regulated airspace areas. As larger vehicles enter airspace in controlled flight areas, deconfliction and separation issues must be addressed. In your view, should vehicles be allowed to operate autonomously in the airspace, or should systems operators maintain continual command authority over the vehicles? From the human factors perspective, explain your viewpoint as it affects the safety of other aircraft, air traffic management, and cautions or limitations that should be considered. Take a position on this issue and explain your view. Provide at least one scholarly source to support your position.
