Explain what causes a cell to become cancerous


Problem: Cancer begins when a normal cell loses its ability to properly control cell division. In other words, a normal cell turns into a cancer cell. What causes this happen? Why does this seem to happen more frequently with certain types of cells? For example, skin cells seem to be particularly likely as skin cancer is the most common type of cancer. And lastly, why is it that older individuals are more likely to be diagnosed with cancer?

1. Use terminology to clearly explain what causes a cell to become cancerous. Be sure to address the molecular basis and some of the potential causative factors (i.e. cancer-causing agents).

2. Explain why certain cells seem more likely to lose the ability to control cell division.

3. Explain why the cancer incidence is greater with age.
