I. Conduct online research and select a well-known product liability case from the United States. After researching the case, summarize the history, nature, and outcome of the case, including an explanation of what liability theory the case was based on. After summarizing the case, assess whether you personally agreed with the outcome of the case based on what you have learned in this lesson. Explain your answer and be sure to include a full ALWD citation for the case.

II. Compare and contrast the three types of torts: (i) intentional torts, (ii) negligence, and (iii) strict liability. Provide a specific example of each and be sure to cite your source(s) in ALWD format.

III. Imagine that you are a paralegal working for a consumer protection law firm. Your supervising attorney consults with Dottie Dannings, who says she has been getting calls from people claiming to work for the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). She is frightened, because they tell her that she owes the IRS a lot of money and that, if she doesn't pay, she could be sent to collections and a warrant could even be issued for her arrest. Your supervising attorney does not think the situation would make for a good lawsuit, but he wants to give Dottie some direction on how to deal with the scam calls. Conduct online research into which government agencies Dottie can turn to for assistance. Draft an email to your supervising attorney identifying at least two government agencies, explain their role in combating this sort of phone scam, and provide all relevant contact information and their reporting instructions so that this information can then be given to Dottie. Be sure to cite your sources in ALWD format.

IV. A statute requires all vessels traveling on the Great Lakes to provide lifeboats [but it does NOT impose strict liability if the law is violated]. One of Winston Steamship Company's boats is sent out of port without a lifeboat. Perry, a sailor onboard this boat, falls overboard in a storm so strong that had there been a lifeboat, it could not have been launched. Perry drowns. Is Winston liable to Perry's estate for wrongful death by negligence? Explain your answer and be sure to cite your source(s) in ALWD format.
