Discussion Post: Politics & Society in the Middle East
In the West, secularism tends to mean that religion is removed from the legal realm and in cases like France, removed from public space. The MENA region is a place that complicates Western notions of religion and secularism. Using three assigned readings, explain the ways that the region could be seen as religious, as well as secular; in other words, how is it neither a theocracy, but also not devoid of religion. In doing so, make an argument of how we should conceptualize secularism.
