Explain the purpose of the reynolds transport theorem

Assignment Task - Answer all questions.

Question 1: Write a half page essay on the oils used in car engines in different seasons and their viscosities.

Question 2: Briefly explain the purpose of the Reynolds Transport Theorem (RTT). Write the RTT for the extensive property as a "word equation," explaining each term in your own words.

Question 3: The cone shown in the figure below floats in a liquid with S.GL. Write a relationship for calculating force T in terms of S.GL, S.GS R, H and h. Also, what is the ratio of S.GL/S.GS when T=0?

Question 4: An open settling tank shown in the figure below contains a liquid suspension. Determine the resultant force acting on the gate and its line of action if the liquid density is 850 kg/m3. The gate is parabolic as sketched, looking straight at the gate.

Question 5: Two containers are connected to each other by a pipe with a diameter of 3 cm. Container A initially contains water but container B is empty. The cross-sectional area of container A and B are respectively 4 and 8 m2. If the energy head loss of the pipeline is hL, determine an equation for the time needed to empty the container A completely. Your proposed equation should be in terms of container A surface area, pipe cross sectional area, Ap, and hL.

Question 6: Water flowing steadily at a rate of 0.16 m3/s is deflected upwards by an angled elbow as shown in the figure below. For D = 30 cm, d = 10 cm, and h = 50 cm, determine the force acting on the elbow and the angle its line of action makes with the horizontal. Take the internal volume of the elbow to be 0.03 m3 and disregard the weight of the elbow material and the frictional effects.
