Explain the non-identity problem

Assignment task:

Part I: Good responses will likely be around 1-2. paragraphs.  (depending on how you write). If you find yourself writing page after page, you're probably doing more than is necessary. If you think that you're done with a question after two sentences, you're probably not doing enough.

1. Explain the non-identity problem (with your own example).

2. Pick 2 of the 4 responses we covered:

  • Explain Parfit's solution.
  • Explain Boonin's Response to the problem as well as the intuitional issue that he thinks underlies the problem.
  • Harman's response
  • Finally explain Gardner's response to the problem.

A. Explain ecofeminism and the ethics of care. Why do ecofeminists think adopting the ethics of care would improve the environment? (3 points)

B. Explain the Tragedy of the Commons (ToC). What is required for something to be a tragedy of the commons case? What is Hardin's favored solution? Provide your own example of a ToC (3 points).

C. Given the things that we've talked about in class and in the Hourdequin text, what is our responsibility when it comes to dealing with climate change? Why is it hard to ground individual responsibility concerning climate change? What do you suggest should be done about the issue or is the way to approach the issue (for instance, you may talk about geoengineering and other technical solutions, or collective political action responses, cultural, etc.)?

Part II: Alternatively, you may talk about e-waste and recycling chains as it is another collective action problem with similar issues to climate change.  You would have to talk about all of the same parts as the climate change question; you would just have a different focus.
