Explain the first-person point of view

Assignment task:

1. Read "A Rose for Emily" by William Faulkner (p.79-84)

Refer to pages 77-78. Explain the difference between first-person point of view (POV) and third-person POV. Be sure to include the benefits and limitations of each one.

2. Who is the narrator of "A Rose for Emily"? Is the story written in first-person POV or third-person? How do you know? (Look at your answer to the previous questions and think carefully.)

3. What is a eulogy? What purpose does a eulogy serve? In what way could this story be considered to be a eulogy for Miss Emily Grierson?

4. What do you think really happened between Miss Emily and Homer Barron? Where do you see evidence in the story?

5. How do the townspeople feel about Emily? Why? (Consider that we know from the first sentence that she is already dead, so her neighbors already know the whole story.) Would an outsider view her actions in the same way?
