1. Explain the development of labor unions. What were the issues workers faced? What were their demands? What types of unions developed and why-who was included and excluded? Make sure to contextualize the period generally: what types of economic conditions did workers and businesses face in nineteenth-century America? In other words, make sure to mention cycles of boom and bust and their effects on business and workers.
2. What were the experiences and expectations of the "new immigrants" when they arrived in the United States? Aim to include European, Chinese, and Japanese immigrants. Be sure to mention laws passed surrounding their status. How are these experiences and laws similar to or different from the experiences of African Americans in the South after the Civil War? Finally, did the Progressive movement work to change and better the lives of immigrants and African Americans or was it more harmful to them? Why?
