Problem
A. Discuss the power of influence the media has had on your attitudes, beliefs, and worldview. For example, you could discuss the media's impact on instilling racial injustice, gender-conforming norms, or endorsing ageism. Discuss the importance of understanding and exploring media bias within the lens of counseling
B. Identify and provide a summary of a selected media source that illustrates implicit or explicit bias and provide sources of the media you found (that is, a video, website link, et cetera). You may examine any media platform of your choice (Internet, social media, magazines, television, movies, children's books, comic books, radio, news, et cetera) to demonstrate how culture is represented. Discuss the relevance of the selected media in increasing cultural awareness.
C. Identify and explain the cultural messaging in the media that you selected. What was your emotional response? Discuss the harmful effects on the intended audience. Describe ways to respond to the messaging in the media to promote cultural understanding and valuing.
D. Discuss the implications for multicultural counseling based on the media reviewed. For example, as you recognize that the media often portrays people based on racial or ethnic stereotypes, what conclusions can you draw from the media about implicit and explicit biases? What can a counselor do to help combat implicit and explicit bias in therapy? How can you apply the MSJCC framework to provide culturally responsive counseling? Use your text and research from scholarly peer-reviewed journals to support your culturally inclusive counseling best practices.
