Explain role of the judge in the criminal justice system

Question 1: Consider the role of the judge in the criminal justice system and their ability to have major impacts on people and government policy. What difference would it make if a judge was appointed by a politician versus elected by the people? The U.S. Supreme Court, all of whom are appointed by the President, is the most obvious example of political appointment.

Question 2: The textbook comments that police oppose plea bargains, yet police discretion on whether a person is charged and appears before the courts is commonplace. How would you bring these two perspectives into concordance?
