Assignment Task: Your father, a pipe smoker and currently under treatment for advanced cardiovascular disease, was told at his last dental appointment that the hygienist would be using an ultrasonic device during his prophylaxis procedure to remove the stubborn pipe tobacco stains. He reports the dentist said both his teeth and the dental hygienist's hands will be much happier. He calls it a "supersonic" cleaner, but after a few questions, you are quite sure he means an ultrasonic scaler. He wants to know why the hygienist can't just "scrape off all the stain, like usual?" He also adds, "Won't it hurt my enamel? And what about my heart?"
Explain the positive and negative aspects of the use of the ultrasonic scaler and address his safety concerns.
