Watch the documentary found here: The African Americans Many Rivers to Cross Episode 2: The Age of Slavery (1800 -1860) (youtube)
Utilizing both the documentary and the textbook, thoroughly respond to the questions below. (At least 5 to 6 sentences each)
1. Explain how slavery was changed by the market revolution. (How were the last 70 years of slavery in the U.S. different from the previous 150?)
2. Define "chattel slavery" and explain how it worked in the American South.
3. If you had lived as a slave, would you want to have children? Using examples from the documentary, discuss whether the ability to have a family (rare under slavery in the Americas, but common in the United States) tied enslaved people down more, provide much needed support and comfort, or a little of both?
4. Why didn't more slaves participate in violent uprisings? Was violence the only way to resist slavery?
