Homework: Juvenile Justice
Overview
For this Performance Task, you will create a PowerPoint Presentation for a community group audience in which you compare the juvenile and adult systems across police, courts, and corrections.
Instructions
Before submitting your Assessment, carefully review the rubric. This is the same rubric the assessor will use to evaluate your submission and it provides detailed criteria describing how to achieve or master the Competency. Many students find that understanding the requirements of the Assessment and the rubric criteria help them direct their focus and use their time most productively.
Community Group Presentation
Imagine that the community in which you work has seen an increase in crime, most of which has been allegedly committed by a group of young people. Some of these young people have been arrested. The community group has requested a meeting to discuss progress on stopping crime and to learn what will happen to those youths already arrested. To begin this meeting, you plan to first help the community understand how the criminal justice system will intersect with the lives of the young people accused of the crimes.
Task

I. Compare the juvenile and adult systems across policing. (3 to 4 slides)

II. Compare the juvenile and adult court systems. (2 to 4 slides)
i. Explain how due process, cases, and other processes differ.
III. Compare the juvenile and adult corrections systems. (3 to 4 slides)
i. Explain how the practices and goals of juvenile and adult corrections systems differ, including how a focus of the juvenile system is the goal of rehabilitation.
