Explain Genital herpes
Acyclovir (Zovirax, and others), famciclovir (Famvir) or valacyclovir (Valtrex) taken orally for 7-10 days shortens the duration of pain, viral shedding and systemic symptoms in initial herpes simplex virus genital infection. Continuous suppressive therapy with the same drugs decreases symptomatic recurrences and subclinical shedding without cumulative toxicity or apparent development of resistance in immunocompetent persons. Acyclovir-resistant strains of HSV have been reported, however, in previously treated HIV patients.
