Problem
Explain Cesar Chavez's philosophy of non-violence. Give one or two examples of how the United Farm Workers applied it in the face of violence that growers targeted at them. Jose-Antonio Orosco's book, Cesar Chavez and the Common Sense of Non-Violence will be useful. Then explain the debate over non-violence within the Chicano movement. Who represented the debate against non-violence and what and how did they advocate for it? What were the criticisms of Chavez and the United Farmworkers use of non-violence? Jorge Mariscal has written extensively about this in Chapter 4 in Brown Eyed Children of the Sun and in his book Negotiating Cesar.
