Discussion: "From Slavery To The White House"
• The year 2008 saw the election of the first self-identified African-American. Examine the importance of the Civil Rights Movement to the 2008 election. Cite one to two examples of relevant legislation that laid the foundation for the historic election to support your response.
• Analyze the positions of black Conservatives who remain critical of the goals of the Civil Rights Movement and the Great Society. Explain at least two programs or policies that led some African-Americans to reject the involvement of the government in solving the race issues facing America. Next, point out the major events from the Civil Rights Movement that have made black Conservatives reject many of the solutions that equality activists put forward in the 1970s and 1980s.
