Whenever batches of material are produced and then split into smaller units, a split-plot type of design often occurs. A CRD design would require 36 different batches of pulp produced and the entire batch of pulp would be cooked at one temperature level. Note that if only a single batch of pulp was produced under each preparation method and split into 12 sub-batches for the cooking factor, this would be an example of pseudo-replication. Why?
