P.AD - Social Change
Examines social change in the U.S. and abroad. The course also examines the role of business, nonprofit organizations, and the public sector in addressing social problems. Topics studied may include the Civil Rights Movement, environmental issues, education reform, and health policy. The goals of the course are
1) to expose students to social change, social movements, and contemporary social problems;
2) to understand the role of businesses, nonprofit organizations, and the public sector in addressing social problems;
3) to understand institutional structures and contemporary issues related to social change; and 4) to improve student research, writing, and critical thinking skills.
Course Goals & Learning Objectives:

Intersections between sectors, including public-private partnerships and regulatory intervention by governments Identify an initial definition of various "wicked problems" and the goals and interests of network participants Participation in in-class case studies, including role plays, strategy design, and quick presentation
The meaning and process of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and social entrepreneurship Characterize authentic as well as false engagement of sustainability definitions and concepts Short papers to highlight problems and responses related to CSR and other social change efforts
A leadership perspective on advancing social change in programs and organizations of all kinds Develop basic research on leaders and their organizations that target social problems Final paper with a brief presentation, intended to educate classmates and others on the leader and their initiatives
