Every year, an increasing number of lawsuits and disciplinary hearings are brought forward because of the conflict inherent in properly treating severe, unrelenting pain, both in the terminally ill and in the non-terminally ill. These proceedings occur on both sides. Patients and patient family members that are upset that a patient’s pain was not adequately dealt with by a high enough dose or potency of pain medication or intervention as well as family members devastated by the death of a patient who succumbed unintentionally as a result of attempting to control severe pain. It is a very fine line indeed between controlling some severe pain and inadvertently giving a fatal dose of pain medication. The problem is that physicians can never know beforehand how a particular patient will respond. Describe how you would best address both concerns.
