Problem: By evaluating and analyzing the history of medical education it is apparent on how much it has grown. The 1800's gave us physicians who were not trained to see patients, dirty hospitals, nurses who were treated as handmaids and no one understanding where infections were derived from. Many people were treated at home and hospitals were for the poor. The 1960's brought more people being treated in hospitals and fewer home visits. Medicare and Medicaid were signed into law. Today we know that it takes both types of education to make a good physician, but we must understand where our shortcomings still might be. Many doctors are not "teachers" and have no formal training. They are teaching off experience during the apprenticeship portion of the medical education. This is an area that we can grow in. On the academic side reevaluating where the academic focus currently is and look to make some adjustments to better suit our current technology and new research.
