Assignment:
The assignment (1 to 2 pages):
Think for a moment about criminal justice organizations in your city, town, or state. How are they organized? Are they effective? Do they experience organizational conflict?
If you are like most people, you probably have not given thought to complex issues such as organizational effectiveness and conflict. You probably are more likely to be concerned with matters that affect you directly. For example, you might want to know who to call to stop people from breaking into the abandoned house on the corner. You might be surprised to know that this seemingly simple matter may involve the coordination of several criminal justice organizations, might be prioritized to the bottom of the task list based on budget, and may not be viewed as an effective use of criminal justice resources.
You will explore various models used to evaluate the effectiveness of criminal justice organizations. You will also examine organizational conflict and its impact on the management and administration of criminal justice organizations.
Four types of conflict are generally associated with professional organizations: personal, group, intraorganizational, and interorganizational. Such conflict may occur for a variety of reasons, including poor communication, poorly defined roles and responsibilities, or unclear missions or objectives. Managers and administrators of criminal justice organizations must be able to identify and understand each type of conflict. They must also employ strategies to manage conflict and recognize the impact it has on the management and administration of their organizations. As you review the Learning Resources for the week, think about an organizational conflict you have experienced or witnessed. Consider the type of conflict and how it was addressed. Completing this mental exercise with a familiar organization might provide you with insight into how organizational conflict impacts criminal justice organizations.
Consider the various ways that conflict is conceptualized, and think about your own definition of conflict.
Focus on the similarities and differences between and among the different types of organizational conflict.
Think about how different types of organizational conflicts impact the management and administration of criminal justice organizations.
Explain the differences between and among personal, group, intraorganizational, and interorganizational conflict Explain two ways in which each type of conflict might impact the management and administration of criminal justice organizations
