Ethical issues in psychological research

Assignment task 1: Psychological research methods (written response to two questions, word limit)

a: Explain the advantages and disadvantages of using observation in natural settings as a research method in Zimbardo's, 'A Study of Prisoners and Guards in a Simulated Prison.'

b: It can be argued that studies of animal behaviour are relevant to human psychology because humans are thought to have evolved from other species. Explain with examples how the results of Harlow's animal research studies can be related to human behaviour.

Assignment task 2: Ethical issues in psychological research (written argument, word limit including quotes)

Prepare for a small group debate on ethical issues in psychological research. You will need to produce notes outlining an argument which ethically supports Piliavin, Rodin and Piliavin's 1969 study: 'Good Samaritan: An underground phenomenon.' and a counter argument, which is an ethical critique of Piliavin, Rodin and Piliavin's 1969 study: 'Good Samaritan: An underground phenomenon.' Use short direct quotes from the BPS Code of Human Research Ethics (2014) to support your argument and counter-argument. You will then debate both sides of the argument with your group. Following the debate, you will write a conclusion which evaluates the two accounts you have provided, identifying which account you find the most persuasive, based on evidence.
