Original Question - There are many ethical dilemmas that could conflict with your personal values. As a future healthcare administrator, how would you navigate an ethical conflict? Describe a personal experience you have encountered or describe a hypothetical situation you could face.
Initial Post - Healthcare administrators play a key role in a healthcare setting. Morison (2020) stated," HCAs embody professional socialization, competencies, and values. Their position in the organizational cultures makes both unique and important to the success of patient care (p.173)". Healthcare administrators have the role of the quality of the patients care with regulations and staff competence. A hypothetical situation that I came up with that one can face is being a healthcare administrator and a hospital is facing budget constraints. The hospital will need to cut down on costs and reduce staff. However, the main goal is quality of care and patient centered care. For this scenario there needs to be decision making. Healthcare administrators need to have a meeting and discuss the decisions on what costs need to be cut and how many staff members would need to be let go but to still have a staff that is capable of patient centered care. It is important that ethical standards are followed within this situation as well so reviewing the organization's code of ethics and ethical guidelines. Healthcare administrators also need to ensure that medical professionals are to get their perspective on the cut back on costs and staff. Once these steps have been taken, take a look at the consequences with the potential decisions that are being discussed. Before making a decision it is important to consider how these decisions can have consequences as well. From this hypothetical scenario that I came up with I think it was a good example of what healthcare administrators can do if faced with a scenario like this.
