In 1992 a national survey was conducted of third year medical residents (i.e.,doctors in 3rd year of training after medical school) working in U.S. hospitals. At that time, about 70% of medical residents were male, and 30% female. Using the American Medical Association's list of 1989 graduates of American medical schools, a random sample of 1500 female residents and a separate random sample of 1000 male residents were taken. Those selected into the samples, received mail questionnaires regarding their residency program, home life and, in particular, parenting during residency.
One of the main goals of the survey was to estimate the proportion of residents parenting children during residency. Among the female respondents, 14% had children, and among the male respondents 24% had children. Estimate the overall proportion of residents parenting children during residency.
