Assignment: "Who I am" & Ethnography Essay

Step 1- Think about who you are. Brother? Daughter? Partner? Athlete? What groups do you belong to? formal and informal groups? Class? Race? Sexual orientation? What defines you? Team Edward? Where do you fit in society? E.g. Are you going to be a cop, therefore you need criminals and the legal system?

Step 2- After contemplating who you are it is time to write it up in 1-1.5 pages. Relate to class material...e.g. Black...White...middle class, etc. The more application to class terms/topics the better!

Step 3- Once the foundation is set to who you are,.. it is time for the fun to begin with watching a group. You will be performing an informal ethnography.

Ethnography- Studying_ culture at first-hand long enough to detect patterns, multiple perspectives and methods.

In other words, you will be observing a group in which you do not belong. You will watch this group for at least one hour. While you are observing you should be taking notes. It is best for this assignment to do something foreign to you. For example, if you hate sports watch a team practices...if you do not like music groups...explore and watch one. If you are an atheist...attend a church service...If you are a Democrat go to a Republican meeting. Then you will need to write up a detailed account of some of the common themes seen during your observations. Describe the group and its leaders in detail. Then, write a reaction and reflection piece (AT LEAST TWO PACES1 for this assignment. What are your thoughts about this group of people? Did you views and values change? Do you appreciate what they stand for? Due to "who you are" what helped shape your perception of this group before your observation.

This assignment should be 3 to 5 pages long! Normal margins...12 point Tunes New Roman font. Etc.
