This week, you will explore the special senses, especially vision and hearing, through labeling exercises, diagrams, and animations.
The five senses-sight, smell, taste, touch, and hearing-are associated with specialized cells that have receptors for specific stimuli.
The Eye
The eye perceives light and color and is the organ of sight. It has a complex structure and functions like a camera, accommodating changing light conditions and focusing on objects at various distances.
The Ear
The ear perceives sound and is the organ of hearing. It comprises several regions that function together. It transmits vibrations and sends impulses to the brain via the auditory nerve.
The Eustachian Tube
The Eustachian tube joins the nasopharynx and the middle ear. It has a role in ventilation. The tube is more horizontal when we are young and the middle ear is vulnerable to attacking pathogens during this state; children have increased chance of developing otitis media, or middle ear infection. The tube becomes vertically inclined as we age and offers resistance to the pathogens' ascent, thus reducing the risk of ear infection.
