Visual Arts and Film Studies:

The global human rights claims made through the publication of Photographer Ernest Cole’s “House of Bondage”

Project description:

Visit the Ernest Cole exhibition at NYU Grey Art Gallery, 100 Washington Square East, https://www.nyu.edu/greyart/info/info.html. (All the information and the Photographs can be found on the website so it is not necessary to actually visit the gallery.) Write a research paper that closely analyzes a number of Coles photographs, also focusing on the following context: the global human rights claims made through the publication of House of Bondage.

Generally, your paper should do the following:

1. Present a close visual analysis of the work that offers a careful description of both its form and content.

2. Proceed by making sure to pair each piece of descriptive evidence that you present with an interpretive claim about its significance. Or, vice versa, be sure to back up each claim you make about the work with a reference to evidence drawn from the work that supports your claim.

3. Use the research presented in your paper to relate your description and visual analysis to larger ideas or historical issues raised by the work and its context.

This research paper should cite at least three sources.

You will want to research related sources in the library. In addition to catalogues of artists works, you may want to search Artstor for works you are interested in. Limit yourself to academic sources: most reliable are books and scholarly journals published by academic presses and exhibition catalogues from major museums and cultural institutions. Magazines and newspaper articles are less reliable but acceptable. Blogs and unedited websites are not acceptable academic sources.
