Equivalent sense of self-confidence as unacceptable


Groucho Marx once said, "I wouldn't want to belong to a club which would have me as a member." This statement is seen as both witty and reflecting a mild sense of inferiority which is thought to be common in human beings. Why is it that some people see being mildly self-effacing as acceptable and some see having an equivalent sense of self-confidence as unacceptable?
