Equity Theory is a powerful concept. If you feel like you work harder than a peer at your job, yet they make more money than you, you will feel that the situation is unfair (inequitable). You may reduce your effort or feel animus toward your peer or your boss or you may steal from your employer. Would you comment on the situation at this college (and many others) in which faculty that are here a long time make more money than newer faculty and may not be working as hard as newer faculty members? What can be done about this situation?
