Exposition Paragraph
When you are writing about primary or secondary sources there are "modes of composition" that strengthen an essay. One mode is called exposition. Exposition is writing that explains to a reader the details that need to be known to understand the "facts" of a work. We need to assume that the readers of our essays are unfamiliar with our sources.
Assignment: Refer to the story of "Parsilette" by Charlotte-Rose Caumont de la Force and in a single paragraph (200-250 words) write an exposition paragraph that describes the plot of the story.
Description Paragraph: A second mode of writing that strengthens an essay is description. Description recreates details through careful observation and precise language. It allows readers to visualize the primary source.
Assignment: Refer to the story "Sun, Moon, and Talia" by Giambattista Basile and in a single paragraph (200-250 words) describe the plot of the story. This paragraph will also be a summary, but it will utilize the methods of integrating quotations presented in class. You may use three of the four methods (not the block quotation).
