DESIGN PROJECT - CIVIL AND STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING - STEEL FABRICATION WORKSHOP, STORES, AND OFFICES
The work you will complete for this unit will require you to demonstrate the validity of the knowledge and experience that you have acquired from previous CDU units or elsewhere in recent years. You will also have to seek out and work with additional resources to develop your knowledge and understanding of new topics or topics that may have been introduced in earlier studies. The University must be satisfied that you are able to bring all the various skills you are expected to possess to the effective solution of design problems - whether or not the problem is presented in terms that are within your actual previous experience.
In selecting and developing your design of structures, you should also remember general guidance given in previous design studies, and in particular:
a) all structures must be safe;
b) a good design has certain typical features of simplicity, unity, and necessity;
c) structures must fulfil their intended function.
Client's requirements
1. A steel fabricator wishes to construct a new workshop with offices and stores. A crane with a safe working load of 15 tonnes will provide full coverage of the workshop area, which is to be column-free (see Figure 1-attached).
2. Two doors each 11.0 m wide × 7.0 m high are to be provided in the west and south elevations.
3. The elevations for the whole development including the roof are to be in lightweight construction using metal cladding. Roof lights are to be provided over 20% of the roof area.
4. The maximum overall height of the workshop is to be limited to 15.0 m. The maximum spacing of perimeter columns is to be 10.0 m. The office and store areas are each to have two levels with a minimum floor to floor height of 4.0 m.
5. The minimum hook approach is to be 1.5 m. The overall depth of the crane including hoist is to be 1.5 m with a clear height of 8.0 m from floor level to the underside of the crane bridge.
Assignment 1 - Statement of Work (and Initial Conceptual Design)
Prepare a design solution with appropriate sketches indicating a distinct and viable structural solution for the proposed structure including the foundations. Your solution must comply with all the requirements of the Client's brief.
A clear statement must be made for the proposed design to indicate the fundamental philosophy of its design, and materials to be used.
You will need to provide numerous (hand-drawn) sketches to include a plan view of the scheme, together with sufficient elevations and sections to describe important features of the design.
These sketches must clearly indicate the: functional framing, load transfer, and stability aspects of the scheme that you propose.
Assignment 2 - Critical Analysis of Options (and Further Conceptual Design)
a) Prepare a second conceptual design solution, again with appropriate sketches for a viable structural solution for the proposed structure and its foundations. This solution must also comply with all the requirements of the Client's brief.
A clear statement must be made for the proposed design to indicate the fundamental philosophy of its design, and materials to be used.
As in Assignment 1, you will need to provide numerous (hand-drawn) sketches of plan views of the scheme, together with sufficient elevations and sections through the building to describe important features of the design.
These sketches must clearly indicate the: functional framing, load transfer, and stability aspects of the scheme that you propose.
CHANGING MATERIALS BUT USING THE SAME STRUCTURAL DESIGN IS NOT ACCEPTABLE AND WILL RESULT IN AUTOMATIC FAILURE OF THIS UNIT.
b) Consider both of the proposed solutions, and make a recommendation regarding which one you would choose to develop, giving reasons to support your choice.
c) After the workshop has been built, and due to an increase in workload, the Client needs to replace the existing crane with one with a higher capacity capable of lifting up to 30 tonnes. Write a letter to the Client explaining how this can be achieved, and include this letter in your submission for this Assignment.
Assignment 3 - Final Design Recommendation (and Detailed Design)
Detailed design of a number of structural elements and foundation(s) will be required for Assignment 3. Further information of which elements are to be designed will be available later in the Unit.
